Ottawa Day 2 - Liitle Ray's Reptile Zoo

On Thursday morning , we headed out to find a place called Little Ray's Reptile Zoo. Morgan and I had seen then on YTV a few weeks back and it looked like just the sort of thing my kids would love to see.

Their website is: http://www.raysreptiles.com/

We arrived just in time for a feeding demonstration. There is a room with benches all around where you can sit and they bring the animals out to show you. The first animal was a tortoise (can't remember what kind, but I think she was a red legged one due to the red spots on her legs). The kids took turns feeding her some pieces of melon:

This is a newly born hatchling. His mom is the tortoise we fed the melon to. The yellowish thing on his tummy is his yoke sack which was still feeding him. He had hatched just that morning. There were also some 4 day old baby's they brought out to show us as well.

Warning: Next pictures are a little gross, but fascinating!

The next creature they fed was an albino rat snake. Rat snakes, surprisingly enough, eat rats, so they fed him a dead rat. They jiggled it a bit to make it look alive and we were all surprised at how fast the snake moved to constrict it's prey:

It took the snake about 15-20 minutes to swallow the whole rat. It was cool to watch, but made me glad that I am not a rat!

You were just down the street from Danny's sister Debbie. They are here visiting today. Debbie says she doesn't need that kind of friends (spider).

Actually, it was okay to hold the spider. I admit that my hand was prickling in fear, but she just sat there and didn't do anything scary.

Once you hear the people talking about them, they seem a lot less creepy.

Still, I don't think I would have one as a pet. Maybe a nice lizard or snake instead.
